The Renters (Reform) Bill, the Government's masterplan to transform the private rented sector, is reported to have been dropped as a result of the general election announcement.
Rent controls ‘not Labour policy’
Labour has once again stressed that rent controls are not party policy in the wake of an independent report it commissioned into the private rented sector (PRS). The report, which was released this week, suggests Labour needs to ‘decrease the country’s dependence on the PRS’ and recommends the introduction of what author Stephen Cowan describes as ‘third-generation rent stabilisation’.

Supply and demand issues are driving rents ever higher, with urgent action needed to support landlords and tenants. The NRLA has called for positive action to help meet the increasing demand for rented homes, after new figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed rents have risen by 15 per cent since January 2022.
