Right to rent transition period extended

Changes to right to rent checks, introduced in response to the Covid-19 pandemic will remain in place until  June 21. Emergency measures, introduced in March last year to minimise face-to-face contact, were due to end on Sunday - but the Government has announced they will be extended to give landlords more time to adjust.

More than a quarter of a million homes in England are lying empty, despite record numbers of people being desperately in need of somewhere to live. There are now 268,385 long-term empty homes in England - up 20% on the previous year - with Government figures showing the numbers have gone up in nine out of 10 council areas.

Government fails to tackle Covid rent debt crisis

The eviction ban in England has been extended for six weeks, in a move described as a 'sticking plaster' by landlords. Current restrictions were due to end on Monday. The NRLA says the move will do nothing to support landlords and tenants long term and what is needed is a comprehensive financial package, to allow tenants to continue to pay their rent without building unmanageable debt.
