The Big Question: Do you allow tenants to smoke in your rentals?

Smoking is a controversial issue. We all know the health risks, yet still just over 13% of the country are smokers, a total of 6.6 million people.

What does this mean for you and your rentals? Should you allow tenants to smoke in what is, at the end of the day, their home?Or does the increased risk of fire and the smells and staining associated with tobacco use put you off.

And what about vaping?

The NRLA AST includes a clause prohibiting smoking of tobacco, or any other substance in the property without written permission, also clarifying that nicotine staining is not considered to be fair wear and tear.

What is your approach? And what are your experiences? Have your tenants respected a ban, or broken the rules? Have you had to claim from the deposit?

The NRLA is asking about your approach for our next ‘Big Question’ feature in NRLA members’ magazine, Property.

Each edition of the magazine explores a topical issue related to renting, to find out more about your thoughts, opinions and experiences.
