Universal Credit: Government criticised in new housing report
"Good, professional landlords" are being put off renting to benefits claimants as a direct result of problems around the government's administration of Universal Credit, according to a new report.
New extension to emergency right to measures
Emergency right to rent measures introduced to minimise face-to-face contact will now be in place until the end of August the Government has announced. Adjusted checks were introduced in March last year in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and were originally due to end on June 20.

NRLA invited to high level Government talks
NRLA chief executive Ben Beadle has been invited to join Government discussions on plans for widespread reform of the PRS. The Government promised a white paper on its proposals for new legislation in this year's Queen's Speech, two years after it announced plans for a Renters' Reform Bill, which would see the abolition of Section 21 repossessions - so-called 'no fault' evictions.
Housing payments 'not fit for purpose' NRLA tells Government
NRLA Chief Executive Ben Beadle has called for an overhaul of local housing support in the PRS while giving evidence to the Work and Pensions Select Committee. Ben told the committee the Discretionary Housing Payment is not fit for purpose and said changes are needed to ensure Universal Credit works as intended.
Right to rent transition period extended
Changes to right to rent checks, introduced in response to the Covid-19 pandemic will remain in place until June 21. Emergency measures, introduced in March last year to minimise face-to-face contact, were due to end on Sunday - but the Government has announced they will be extended to give landlords more time to adjust.

Empty home levels hit a record high - so what can be done?
More than a quarter of a million homes in England are lying empty, despite record numbers of people being desperately in need of somewhere to live. There are now 268,385 long-term empty homes in England - up 20% on the previous year - with Government figures showing the numbers have gone up in nine out of 10 council areas.
