Writing to your MP: How you can support us

This week, Public Affairs Officer Mia Rotaru, looks at the importance of writing to your Member of Parliament (MP) to raise awareness about the private rented sector (PRS) and help support NRLA campaigns work.

With the introduction of the Renters’ Rights Bill, set to be the most substantial reform in over 30 years, the private rented sector is facing a significant change. That is why is crucial to advocate for balanced legislation that benefit both tenants and landlords.

The NRLA is actively campaigning to ensure that the Government's proposals are fair and practical. We have identified several key areas where reforms are necessary to create a more effective PRS. Our calls to action include:

  • Clear and workable grounds for possession: Responsible landlords need explicit and reasonable grounds for repossessing a property when legitimate issues arise.

  • Support for student housing: The cyclical nature of the student housing market must be preserved, enabling student landlords to operate with confidence.

  • Preparation time for new regulations: Landlords require adequate time to adapt to changes following the abolition of Section 21.

  • A balanced approach to anti-social behaviour: We advocate for measures that empower landlords to address anti-social behaviour while simultaneously protecting tenants' rights.

  • Improving the justice system: A robust plan is needed to enhance the justice system, ensuring it provides certainty for both tenants and landlords.

How can I make my voice heard?

While we engage with Government representatives and MPs to advocate for a fair and balanced approach, you can contribute by writing directly to your MP about your experiences and the potential impact of the Renters' Rights Bill on the sector as a whole.

MPs have revealed that a personalised letter from a dedicated and passionate constituent carries far more weight than identical mass template letters.

This is why writing a letter that incorporates your personal experiences as a landlord can effectively convey the true priorities within your community.

Recognising that the challenges faced by landlords can vary significantly by region, we have created several regional briefings with factual data on the current state of each region, highlighting the unique concerns landlords face across England and Wales.

By combining your personal story with this regional data, you can craft a thoughtful and well-informed letter that reflects genuine concern, significantly increasing the likelihood that your voice will be heard and taken seriously.

The recent 2024 General Election has introduced over 300 new MPs to Parliament, many of whom may not yet be aware of the specific challenges facing the PRS in their constituencies. That is why taking the time to write to an MP can significantly impact the private rented sector. Your commitment can help ensure that the new reforms are fair, practical, and tailored to landlords.
