Q&A: Get to know NRLA Wales' Steve
We are delighted to launch a new blog series where you can get to know some of our NRLA Wales team a little better. Here, we chat to NRLA Wales operations manager Steve Bletsoe.
Hi Steve. Great to meet you! Tell us a bit about you. What is your role at the NRLA?
My name is Steven Bletsoe and I live in Bridgend, South Wales. I have previously owned a property location company, working for the purchasers of investment and personal residential and commercial property. I was self-employed for 20 years, before working as a case worker in the Welsh Parliament and being a Councillor in Bridgend since 2017 and being Mayor of my hometown between January 2021 and May 2022. I have been married to Freya for 25 years and have three grown up children. I joined the NRLA in February 2022 as the Operations Manager Wales, a strategic role within the organisation that will act within the management structure to represent the needs of landlords with properties in Wales. Working with other Managers to ensure that those who own properties in Wales have access to the full information, training and support that relates to the legislation set by Welsh Government under their devolved powers. I am really excited by this role and look forward to working with all staff at the NRLA and on behalf of all members.

What do you enjoy about your role?
Whilst only being in position for a short time, I already feel at home and settled into a key post. There is no doubt that I have had to hit the ground running with the changes due on 15th July to ensure that the NRLA prepare for the Renting Homes (Wales) Act and to ensure that all members have access to the information they need. I have been so impressed with what was already in development to prepare for this game changing legislation and I have been supported by everyone within the NRLA to help me help landlords who own properties in Wales.
What does the road ahead look like for landlords in Wales?
The road ahead is different to the one that has brought landlords to this point, not necessarily more difficult, but different. It is a road that presents itself with different terms of reference that all landlords will be used to. Where you will now have an occupation contract rather then a tenancy agreement and a contract holder rather than a tenant. However, we at the NRLA are ensuring that everything is in place to look after landlords needs. From training with Welsh specific content and Rent Smart Wales approved courses, to specially trained advice line advisers, model occupation contracts for members and the communication with and representation to all levels of Government and Councils I know that the road is more easily navigated by our members.
As a company we offer advice to landlords. What’s the best piece of advice that you’ve received? (this could be professionally or even in general)
My late Nan always told me, never put off until tomorrow what you can do today, and whilst she may at that time have been referring to the washing up, I feel that it is pertinent to what landlords need to do in relation to how they deal with their properties
What do you like to do in your spare time outside of working for the NRLA?
I love being a Councillor in the Ward where I was born and raised, I love helping people with their problems. I also currently carry out a number of civic responsibilities as Mayor on behalf of my hometown. Away from that I enjoy watching rugby and ice hockey and to relax I enjoy listening to music whenever possible.
