Countdown to the big switch-off: Is your rental affected?

The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) will end on 30 June this year, affecting some heating and hot water supplies in rental properties.

RTS meters allow customers to switch between peak and off-peak rates and there are currently thought to be around 900,000 in use across Great Britain,

All electricity suppliers are contacting customers that will be affected to offer them a smart meter upgrade before the RTS service ends.

Is my meter affected?

You may have an RTS meter if:

  • there is a separate switch box near your meter with a radio teleswitch label on it

  • your property is heated using electricity or storage heaters

  • there is no gas supply to your area. This includes households in rural areas and high-rise flats

  • you get cheaper energy at different times of day. Your tariff might be Economy 7, Economy 10 or Total Heat Total Control

If you are still not sure, your electricity supplier will confirm for you, so contact them directly

A smart meter can deliver a similar service to RTS and will also provide you with other benefits, including bills based on energy used, rather than estimates.
