Burnham tells landlords housing is the ‘single best investment that the UK can make’

Greater Manchester Mayor and former Government Minister Andy Burnham said quality housing is vital to both society and the economy at the NRLA’s annual Landlord Conference this week.

He told the thousand landlords and property professionals in attendance that a vibrant private rented sector (PRS) is an essential part of the housing market and assured the packed auditorium he wants good landlords to remain in the sector.

He also said he is committed to working with landlords in Greater Manchester to ensure regulation of the PRS is fair, and that a ‘mixed market’ of housing tenures is essential, adding that schemes such as his Good Landlord Charter can build trust between local authorities and the private rented sector.

This comes after NRLA research showed there are huge disparities between levels of enforcement depending on where your rentals are in the country.

Burnham also thanked the NRLA for its involvement in helping shape the charter, which launched this summer, with the aim of ‘isolating’ bad landlords and recognising those doing it right.

Ben Beadle, Chief Executive of the NRLA, said:  “Our speakers provided many fantastic insights to our attendees on how they can continue to do what they do best – deliver much-needed top quality private rented accommodation for tenants.

“Andy Burnham’s pledge to collaborate with the NRLA and its members to raise standards and drive out rogue landlords from the sector was also most welcome.

“We look forward to working with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority in its efforts to recognise the good work that the overwhelming majority of landlords do across the market.”

The NRLA’s 2024 conference – which had 1,000 attendees – was chaired by DIY SOS’s Nick Knowles with former Dragon's Den star James Caan CBE joining Andy Burnham as a keynote speaker
