Renters Reform Bill launch: NRLA secures widespread media coverage

This week saw the publication of the Renters Reform Bill, which sets out the most significant legislative changes the private rented sector has witnessed in decades.

In line with the NRLA’s mission to become the leading voice for landlords, we took steps to ensure the ‘landlord’s perspective’ was taken into account by the UK media’s response to the release of the Bill.

Our media campaign also focused on the ways in which the Government’s has taken into account many of the NRLA’s proposals on how the future of the sector can be shaped to ensure a fair outcome for both landlords and tenants. Further details on the specific ways in which the Government has responded to the NRLA’s campaigning can be found here.

Throughout the course of the day our Chief Executive Ben Beadle appeared on numerous broadcast media outlets, including BBC Breakfast, ITV’s Good Morning Britain, BBC London, 5 News, Channel 4 News, Times Radio and BBC Radio 2. During his appearance on Jeremy Vine’s BBC Radio 2 show (an appearance which followed an interview with Secretary of State Michael Gove), Ben spoke clearly about the contents of the Bill and our reaction to the key aspects of the legislation. You can listen to Ben’s contribution, which begins at around 40:43, (the feature focusing on the Bill starts from 33:47) here.

These appearances followed the distribution of an NRLA statement expanding on our position as regards the key elements of the Bill.

Following the Bill’s publication our statement was covered by a range of UK media outlets, including BBC News, ITV News, The Times, and The Telegraph.

Alongside the blanket media coverage we secured over the past week, Ben authored a by-lined article for The Telegraph focusing on how crucial it is that the Bill works in the interests of responsible landlords and tenants.

In addition to Ben’s contribution to the day’s campaigning, our Policy Director Chris Norris also provided analysis on the Bill for a range of other broadcast outlets.

On the day of the Bill’s launch Chris spoke with LBC News, and also participated in a discussion on BBC Radio 4’s ‘You & Yours’ on the implications of the Bill for the market (Chris’s R4 appearance begins at 47:10 here).

Overall, the NRLA received over 700 pieces of media coverage across national, trade and local media, which includes 297 broadcast mentions across national and local press.

Our spokespeople also took part in 19 press interviews over the course of the week focusing on the key aspects of the legislation. The events of the past week mean that the NRLA has taken a further step towards ensuring the perspectives of all residential landlords will be taken into account during the next stages of the legislative process. More to the point, we’ll be continuing our ongoing campaign to ensure the Bill delivers a private rented sector which is fair, inclusive and which works in the interests of all parties.
