Time for action: Make sure your MP joins the debate on rental reform

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for the private rented sector (PRS) meets on 12 December to launch a new publication outlining industry leaders’ ambitions for rental reform.

Make sure your MP is part of this crucial discussion by writing to them and encouraging their attendance.

What is an all-party parliamentary group?

APPGs are informal, cross-party groups where parliamentarians discuss issues of common interest. Despite their unofficial status, APPGs can conduct inquiries like official parliamentary committees, and, in doing so, can raise awareness of a policy area or practice in need of change or reform. Often, APPGs seek input from external stakeholders who use the forums to highlight problems, propose policy and influence parliamentarians.

There are more than 750 APPGs – some more influential than others – focusing on issues ranging from access to justice to zoos and aquariums, and countries as far-flung as Antigua to Zambia.

Some well-administrated and well-attended APPGs have secured meaningful change to policy, and with the Renters (Reform) Bill progressing through parliament, the next meeting of the APPG for the PRS presents an ideal opportunity to shape thinking.

Why should my MP attend?

The APPG for the PRS aims to improve awareness of private rented housing across parliament. It provides a platform to debate issues affecting the sector and allows parliamentarians to quiz industry experts on specific aspects of the Government’s reforms.

At the next meeting, the APPG will publish a report coinciding with the critical report stage of the Renters (Reform) Bill. Six contributors, including the NRLA’s Chief Executive, Ben Beadle, Shelter’s Chief Executive, Polly Neate, and BPF’s Director of Policy, Ian Fletcher will outline their differing views of the PRS and the reforms needed. While priorities may differ, there is broad consensus on the need for a healthy PRS that provides safe, secure, and affordable homes.

How can I make sure my MP doesn’t miss out?

Write to your MP using our template letter, to explain why their participation is crucial to you as a constituent. It takes just five minutes and could significantly impact the Bill's progression through parliament.

It is vital that parliamentarians are aware of the significance of the reforms under consideration, and asking your MP to engage with the APPG is a good way of making sure they understand the key issues.

Please let us know if you get a response from your MP by emailing [email protected]. This allows us to respond to any particular interests or concerns they may have.
