NRLA insights on net zero speech secure blanket media coverage

In the wake of the Prime Minister’s speech confirming that a range of policies designed to help the UK meet its net zero goals will be dropped, the NRLA responded to the news on behalf of its members.

After issuing a press release outlining our perspective on the announcement, the organisation’s insights made a significant impact across the UK media.

Since the speech was delivered on 22 September, the NRLA’s Communications Team has secured a total of over 400 media mentions in target press. In the wake of the PM’s announcement our spokespeople were interviewed by a number of broadcasters, such as BBC Newsnight, Times Radio and BBC Cambridge – in all our media outreach produced 90 items of broadcast coverage. The aforementioned total includes 172 pieces of local press coverage.

Our commentary was featured in pieces run by BBC News, The Guardian, the Evening Standard and Mail Online, in addition to a wide array of other media outlets.

Reacting to the announcement, Ben Beadle, Chief Executive of the NRLA, said:

"The NRLA wants to see all properties as energy efficient as possible. However, the uncertainty surrounding energy efficiency policy has been hugely damaging to the supply of rented homes.

"Landlords are struggling to make investment decisions without a clear idea of the Government's direction of travel.

“It is welcome that landlords will not be required to invest substantial sums of money during a cost-of-living crisis when many are themselves struggling financially. However, ministers need to use the space they are creating to develop a full plan that supports the rental market to make the energy efficiency improvements we all want to see.

"This must include appropriate financial support and reform of the tax system which currently fails to support investment in energy efficiency measures.”
