Campaigns and Public Affairs Update: What we are doing for you
This week the NRLA’s Policy and Campaigns Team has been busy meeting with key government officials and parliamentarians, where we discussed wide-ranging issues from tackling anti-social behaviour to the shortcomings of the Building Safety Act.
Our CEO Ben Beadle attended the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for the Private Rented Sector (PRS) where he outlined what steps the Government must take to maintain the vital supply of properties in the PRS.
The meeting was chaired by the Conservative Member of Parliament for Northampton South, Andrew Lewer, and sought to discuss the Government’s ‘A Fairer Private Rented Sector’ White Paper and other key issues affecting our sector.
Attending for the first time was the Housing Minister, Felicity Buchan MP. Ben, as well as other attendees, took the opportunity to press the Minister on a variety of issues ranging from strengthening the grounds for possession to minimum energy efficiency standards.
At the meeting, the Minister recognised the vital role the PRS plays and emphasised that the Government’s approach to reform must be fair and balanced.
Other High-Level Meetings This Week
Elsewhere, the NRLA met with researchers from Labour’s Shadow Justice Team to discuss anti-social behaviour (ASB) in the PRS.
Ben outlined the NRLA’s proposals on ASB and highlighted the need for strengthened mechanisms for landlords to deal with anti-social tenants in light of the abolition of Section 21.
Additionally, Ben had discussions with officials from the LUHC Select Committee to outline the NRLA’s concerns relating to the Building Safety Act, specifically the impact the Act has had on some leaseholders (and their tenants) who are not protected from the costs of remediating safety defects.
