Meet the Speaker: PR guru Russell Quirk

“The NRLA Landlord Conference is one of the most important landlord events for years.”

So says Russell Quirk, co-founder of ProperPR and popular industry commentator. His varied career has seen him work across almost  every part of the private rented sector, as a councillor, an estate agent and a personal adviser on the  UK property industry, putting him in a unique position when it comes to reflecting on the impact of the latest legislative changes on the table.

Significant changes

The conference, at Birmingham’s NEC will take place on November 6, just a few weeks after Rachel Reeves delivers her first budget as chancellor.

“There will be significant changes for landlords to keep abreast of – whether it be economic, regulations or taxation,” he says.“Landlords really need to understand, from a very honest perspective, what all this means to them.

“Should you sell, should you expand your portfolio, should you reconstitute as an individual or as an incorporated company – all this stuff is going to be really important.”

“The information that will be gained from this conference will be genuinely vital for landlords going forward.”

Kneejerk

He is less positive about the Renters’ Rights Bill which he calls a ‘kneejerk piece of legislation.’

“We know that most tenancies are terminated by the tenants, not the landlords,” he said. “What the government should be focusing on are issues such as notice periods – with the new rules allowing tenants to give notice from day one. This is the sort of thing that will drive landlords out of the sector.”

His day job remains advising clients at ProperPR, and although he is loath to mention who they are, they include individuals and organisations from across the industry, from housebuilders and estate agents to mortgage lenders, brokers and proptech firms – many of whom are household names.

Russell will be joined on stage in November by Paul Shamplina, Chief Commercial Officer at Total Property, Allison Thompson, Managing Director of National Lettings at Leaders Romans Group, Marie Parris, CEO & Founder of George Ellis Property Service and Susan Aktemel, Founder and Executive Director, Homes4Good.

The panel will share their vast experience of life in the industry and the lessons they have learnt.

The conference will be hosted by TV's Nick Knowles with a keynote speech from former Dragon's Den star James Caan.

There will also be talks and panel discussions featuring a range of industry experts as well as networking opportunities and more.
