Andy Burnham to give keynote speech at NRLA conference

Former Government minister and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham will deliver a keynote speech at this year’s NRLA Landlord Conference.

Burnham will be joining a line-up including household names such as former Dragon’s Den star James Caan, and – straight from the Strictly dancefloor – Nick Knowles who will be presenting the event at Birmingham’s NEC on November 6.

Record on housing

The private rented sector, homelessness and housing standards are issues close to Burnham’s heart, and in addition to being responsible for the region’s £300 million housing investment fund, he launched the Greater Manchester Good Landlord Charter in June this year.

The voluntary scheme invites landlords to sign up to the charter to prove their commitment to offering decent homes, and also offers tenants the right to demand an inspection if they believe their property is not up to scratch.

He will discuss the charter and the role metro mayors can play in tackling the housing crisis, along with the importance of the private rented sector in meeting housing need.

NRLA Chief Executive Ben Beadle said: “We are delighted to welcome Andy Burnham to the stellar line-up at the latest of our award-winning conferences, following Michael Gove’s appearance last year.

“As we know housing, particularly the private rented sector, is one of his key priorities, and we are interested to get his take on the legislation change up ahead as well as potential local funding streams for landlords in combined authority areas.

“I’m sure our delegates will also welcome the chance to get down to brass tacks and ask questions on the day.”

PRS a 'key partner' in meeting housing need

Andy Burnham said: “Without good, safe housing, people cannot achieve their potential, and places cannot deliver growth.

"We know that new homes on their own won’t solve the housing crisis and the private rented sector is a key partner in helping us meet housing need across the region.

"For the thousands in private rented accommodation, having a good landlord can make the world of difference to their lives.

“That's why we have launched our Good Landlord Charter, that will give confidence to renters and recognise good landlords. And it’s why we’re investing to grow the local teams who are working to root out those who give the sector a bad name.

"Getting housing right is a big challenge – but one that is essential to delivering lasting change and sustainable growth for our people and places. By working together, we can meet that challenge and provide healthy, secure housing for all our residents.”
